High individual alpha frequency brains run fast, but it does not make them smart

چکیده
Evidence for the relationship between individual alpha frequency (IAF) and cognitive ability (general intelligence) is inconclusive, role of rhythm in shaping cognition hotly debated. This study aimed to provide more conclusive evidence. EEG was recorded during three resting state sessions, a vigilance session, short-term visual memory task. Six respective IAF estimates were calculated total 153 participants. Participants also completed battery 17 tests measuring four main dimensions ability: fluid reasoning, working memory, discrimination, processing speed. Confirmatory factor analysis indicated that factors reflecting as well higher-order general intelligence, unrelated factor. At same time, positively correlated with speed, sharing 5.5% variance. The findings replicated another sample (N = 94) using MEG data different cognitive-ability assessment. Overall, implies brains higher IAFs do run faster, but it does not make them smarter. clarifies so far equivocal dominating functioning.

Individual differences in dual-target RSVP task performance relate to entrainment but not to individual alpha frequency
The attentional blink (AB) paradigm is widely used to study visual temporal attention. An important feature of the standard AB paradigm is repetitive visual stimulation, more precisely the rapid serial visual presentation (RSVP) of numerous distracters interspersed with two targets. The RSVP stream is likely to result in entrainment of visual cortex, which has been suggested to negatively affec...
متن کاملIf it does not kill them , it makes them stronger : collisional evolution of star clusters with tidal shocks
The radii of young ( 100Myr) star clusters correlate only weakly with their masses. This shallow relation has been used to argue that impulsive tidal perturbations, or ‘shocks’, by passing giant molecular clouds (GMCs) preferentially disrupt low-mass clusters. We show that this mass–radius relation is in fact the result of the combined effect of two-body relaxation and repeated tidal shocks. Cl...

Strong evidence links alcohol use to partner violence perpetration among adults, but the relation between youth alcohol use and dating violence perpetration (DVP) is not as well studied. The authors used meta-analytic procedures to evaluate current knowledge on the association between alcohol use and DVP among youth. The authors reviewed 28 studies published in 1985-2010; most (82%) were cross-...
متن کاملModels of verbal working memory capacity: what does it take to make them work?
Theories of working memory (WM) capacity limits will be more useful when we know what aspects of performance are governed by the limits and what aspects are governed by other memory mechanisms. Whereas considerable progress has been made on models of WM capacity limits for visual arrays of separate objects, less progress has been made in understanding verbal materials, especially when words are...
